NEW HAVEN BEGINS ROLL OUT OF NEW RECYCLING PROGRAM

(8/11/2010) (NEW HAVEN)— New Haven will begin rolling out its new recycling program this weekend delivering 6,000 new 48 gallon toters to residents in the City’s Westville neighborhood on Saturday and Sunday. The new toters are meant to be used as trash receptacles allowing the current blue toters that residents already have to now be used for collecting recyclables. The program will go into effect next week in Westville with plans to begin expanding to the rest of the City in the spring of 2011.

John Prokop, Director of the City’s Department of Public Works, will present to Westville residents at a management team meeting at 6:30 this evening at the Westville Substation located at 329 Valley Street.

For residents receiving the new toters, all recycling items should be placed in the blue recycling toter while all trash should go in the brown toter. A complete list of acceptable items for New Haven’s Recycling Program will be distributed to all of the participating households when the new toters are delivered.

The City’s Office of Sustainability is working with local advocacy groups and interested volunteers to provide educational support for the City on waste minimization issues, including recycling, composting and electronics recycling.
